¡Bom! (Martina and Joy duo)
“Why cry if the sun is about to rise?"
Samba dancing can be an intimate interaction between two dancers or a joyful solo performance. Since the 1920s, in the hills of Rio de Janeiro (where the favelas are built), black workers, lovers, musicians, dancers and children - no matter their age, job or gender - have gathered in simple courts to dance and perform the samba. With beautiful melodies and lively rhythms, they try to forget the discrimination and economic pressures they face, wanting only to dance samba and samba until dawn.’
¡Bom! is a Brazilian jazz duo formed in 2022 by singer Martina Effy Bergonzoni and guitarist Joy Goh in the Netherlands. They blend jazz with Brazilian styles such as Bossa Nova, Samba, MPB, Pagode, Forró, children’s songs, Italian tunes, and original works.
What sets ¡Bom! apart is their multi-instrumental approach. Martina sings while playing guitar, flute, Asalato, and both foot and hand percussion—even incorporating dance into her rhythm. Joy plays guitar, cavaquinho, pandeiro, and sings. Together, they create the energy of a trio or quartet as a duo.
They also include Italian songs inspired by Brazilian music, sometimes translating Brazilian lyrics into Martina’s native Italian. They’ve performed at Paradiso Amsterdam, Tivoli Vredenburg, Teatro Munganga, Laaktheater, PrinsjesNach, and began their first international tour in Italy in 2025. Their debut album is set to release in late 2025.
